Nestinarstvo: yet another UNESCO world masterpiece

Nestinarstvo fire dancing was officially inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity at the Fourth Ordinary Session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, held in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. This sets the task of preserving and maintaining this millennia-old Bulgarian tradition for future generations.
The entry of Nestinarstvo as the second Bulgarian masterpiece after the Bistritsa Babi (2005) on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage is yet another great success for Bulgaria in UNESCO. This unquestionably represents recognition of this country, which in recent years has emerged as a leader in safeguarding the rich intangible cultural heritage of humanity and as a major contributor to global cultural diversity.
The archaic Bulgarian rite of fire dancing on the feast days of Saints Constantine and Helena, performed to this day in the village of Bulgari in the Mount Strandzha region of South-East Bulgaria, was presented in Abu Dhabi in a special project entitled “Nestinarstvo: messages from the past".
