UNESCO Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, will carry out an official visit to Bulgaria on 23 and 24 May.

On Thursday, she will begin her visit at the University of Sofia where she will speak to students, academics and diplomats about UNESCO’s role in addressing contemporary global challenges.

She will then hold talks with Rumen Radev, President of Bulgaria, whom she already met at UNESCO’s Headquarters in Paris on 5 December 2017, shortly after her election. A declaration to the press will follow the meeting.

On Friday morning, the Director-General will meet Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.

Ms Azoulay will then be the guest of honour at the celebration of the Day of Bulgarian Education and Culture and Slavic Script at the National Library of Bulgaria.

The Director-General’s stay in in the country will end on a cultural note with visits to the Boyana Church, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1979 as one of the most complete and perfectly preserved monuments of east European medieval art, and to the National History Museum.

Bulgaria is an active member of UNESCO with a seat on the Organization’s Executive Board (2017 to 2021).
