Biodiversity of Bulgaria
Biodiversity in the territory of our country is a remarkable natural fenomen. Varied topography, geology, specific microclimatic conditions and millennia of human activity determine the rich diversity of species, communities and natural habitats, many of which are of conservation importance. Throughout the country are three biogeographical regions - Alpine, Black Sea and continental diverse communities and ecosystems, and almost all major habitat types in Europe.
Of particular importance are plant and animal genetic resources (rare, endangered and endemic species, forests, medicinal plants, mushrooms, sea and freshwater fish, wildlife - ancestors of cultivated plants and breeds) used for industrial and non-commercial purposes.
